Single-Pass Bore Finishing Process

The single-pass honing/bore finishing process involves diamond-coated tools that pass through a bore in a single in-and-out stroke while the tool, part, or both rotate. This method ensures precise and repeatable control over bore size and geometry.

Product Focus:

  • Single-Pass Bore Finishing Process

  • Superior Quality

  • Comparison of Conventional and Single-Pass

  • Single-Pass Bore Finishing vs. Conventional Honing

Comparison with Conventional Honing

In conventional bore honing, tools with cutting surfaces expand and contract as they reciprocate through the bore. This simultaneous radial and axial movement complicates the control of bore size (ID) and geometry (cylindricity).

In contrast, the Engis single-pass process uses fixed-size tools electroplated with diamond abrasive particles. These tools pass through the bore only once, removing a specific amount of material. The process employs progressively larger tools with finer superabrasive particles for precise and consistent results.

Shortest Cycle Times in the Industry

Engis’ single-pass technology reduces cycle times significantly compared to conventional stroke honing. By distributing the workload across a range of tools on an indexing table, cycle times are optimized. The system combines software, in-process sensors, and sophisticated engineering to achieve the most efficient results.

Superior Quality with Engis Single-Pass

Engis single-pass bore finishing technology allows for extremely tight tolerances (e.g., 0.0005 mm) on bore geometry under production conditions. The improved bore geometries result in productivity gains and significant cost reductions. The system is user-friendly, minimizing the need for skilled operators in the honing department.

Engis provides solutions for blind bores, components with windows and roll-over burrs, as well as long stroke applications such as gun barrels.

Engis bore finishing systems deliver cost-saving efficiencies worldwide through superior design, integrated controls, and automation systems. The Engis Diamond Plated Bore Finishing Tools are key to achieving high-precision finishing. With decades of experience, Engis has successfully addressed complex application challenges, maintaining sub-micron tolerances without sacrificing cost or cycle time.
